Liquid Screed in Littlehampton

How Does Flow Screed Preparation and Application Differ from Traditional Options?

If you’re planning a property renovation or new build in Littlehampton, you likely have some familiarity with the term ‘screed’. If not, let us briefly introduce you to the concept. A screed is typically the concluding finish for your property’s flooring. You can either leave it bare or cover it over with carpets, tiling or other decorative solutions. Screeding produces a robust, even surface for use in any domestic or commercial setting. What’s more, it’s also the perfect environment for installing underfloor heating systems.

As our name suggests, SSR Flow Screed is a flow screeding company. We also operate as underfloor heating installers. Our team uses innovative liquid screed methods to deliver quick, high-performance, long-lasting results. But how does flow screed preparation and application differ from more traditional options?

Traditional Vs Flow Screeding

Our screeding company uses industry-leading pumps to pour liquid screed into your designated space. This is as opposed to the more traditional combination of sand and cement which other companies apply by hand. In most cases, they use a trowel to move the mixture before compacting it down with a straightedge or screed board. With simple flow screed preparation too, the entire process is faster, less labour intensive and more cost-effective.

This explains why property developers prefer flow screeding over traditional approaches. For context, BS 8204 recommends a drying time of 1 day for every millimetre of thickness when applying traditional screed. And this only applies to the first 50mm of thickness; this doubles to 2 days for every subsequent millimetre after the initial 50mm.

This means that, in compliance with BS 8204, a 75mm-thick screed at your Littlehampton property would require a drying time of 100 days. Of course, this is highly unappealing if you want to avoid delays when trying to meet a tight deadline.

As a screeding company, not to mention underfloor heating installers, we lay surfaces that are ready in a fraction of the time. Flow screed preparation is a simple process, and the surface itself is ready to walk on after only 24 hours. This minimises disruption to other tradespeople, allowing them to complete their work without delay.

The faster individual trades complete their job, the lower the total cost of your project.

But this isn’t the only benefit. Not only do we lay liquid screed in a thinner layer, but this layer is also stronger than sand and cement combinations with a greater depth. What’s more, the thinner depth also allows you to fit a thicker layer of insulation, improving overall energy efficiency. By definition, a thinner layer is lighter, so you also receive further benefits relating to build design and structural integrity.

The advantages of flow screeding extend to UFH systems too. This is why we provide services as both a screeding company and as underfloor heating installers.

Following flow screed preparation, we pour the liquid over the carefully set out pipework. The screed covers the pipes entirely, leaving no air pockets that would slow down – or even prevent – heat transference.

And optimal heat transference is the prime reason to use liquid screed at your Littlehampton home or workplace. This material heats up quickly. As a result, your room reaches the required temperature faster, thereby lowering your overall energy usage and cost.
